Synopsis: S for Self-reliance
We follow a class with adult refugees. The final meeting with the municipality is almost approaching. This way they can complete the so-called Z-route, and they are officially integrated. The Z-route consists of 800 hours of language lessons and 800 participation hours. These participants usually have very little education as children, and cannot complete the B1 route required by the government within 3 years. Only a B1 level of Dutch still entitles you to citizenship. Many refugees will never be able to achieve that.
Some students play the role of municipal officials. They ask the questions, the others answer. In this way, themes are discussed that have been dealt with in the language lessons and also affect their personal lives, such as school, living and work. We see how the new language directs the flow of thoughts, and how different levels emerge within the group. Are they ready for the Dutch society?

We volgen een klas met volwassen vluchtelingen. Het eindgesprek met de gemeente komt er bijna aan. Zo kunnen zij de zogenaamde Z-route afronden, en zijn ze officieel ingeburgerd. De Z-route bestaat uit 800 uur taalles en 800 participatie uren. Deze deelnemers hebben meestal zeer weinig onderwijs genoten als kind, en kunnen de B1 route die geëist wordt door de overheid, niet binnen 3 jaar halen. Alleen een B1 niveau Nederlands geeft nog recht op staatsburgerschap. Voor vele vluchtelingen blijft dat onbereikbaar.
Enkele cursisten vertolken de rol van gemeenteambtenaar. Zij stellen de vragen, de anderen geven antwoord. Zo komen thema’s aanbod die behandeld zijn in de taallessen en tevens hun persoonlijke leven raken, zoals school, wonen en werk. We zien hoe de nieuwe taal de gedachten stroom stuurt, en er zich verschillende niveaus aftekenen binnen de groep. Zijn ze klaar voor de Nederlandse maatschappij?
